Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 3, 2026
EmberTabs is a browser extension that replaces the new tab page, available at embertabs.com and through the Chrome Web Store. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the rights you have over your data.
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, please contact us at DoubleSubs7628@gmail.com.
Data Controller
The data controller responsible for your personal information is:
Kiryl Viarenich Sole proprietorship (Jednoosobowa Działalność Gospodarcza) registered in Poland NIP: 9532793483 Contact: DoubleSubs7628@gmail.com
What the Extension Does and What Stays Local
EmberTabs runs primarily in your browser. Several Chrome permissions are required for core functionality, but the data accessed under these permissions never leaves your device:
history— used only locally to suggest and display your recently visited sites on the new tab page. Your browsing history is never transmitted to our servers or any third party.favicon— used only locally to display site icons on the new tab page. Favicons are not transmitted to our servers.bookmarks— used only locally to display and organize your bookmarks on the new tab page. Bookmark data is not transmitted to our servers.storage— used to store your extension settings. If you do not sign in, settings stay in your browser only. If you sign in (see below), settings are synced through our servers.
Information We Collect
1. Account information (optional)
Creating an account is optional and is only required if you want to sync your settings across devices. When you sign in, we collect:
- Your email address
- Authentication identifiers from your sign-in provider (e.g., Google account ID via OAuth or Firebase Authentication)
- Your EmberTabs settings and preferences (synced to our server so they are available on your other devices)
You can use EmberTabs fully without creating an account. In that case, all your data stays on your device.
2. Subscription and payment information
EmberTabs offers a freemium model: a free version and a paid subscription with premium features. When you purchase a subscription, payments are processed by Stripe. We do not receive or store your full credit card number, CVC, or bank account details — these are handled directly by Stripe on their PCI DSS-compliant infrastructure. For more information on how Stripe handles your payment data, see Stripe's Privacy Policy.
We do receive and store:
- Your subscription status (active, cancelled, expired)
- Subscription plan and billing period
- A Stripe customer identifier
- Country of purchase (for tax purposes)
- Invoice metadata required by Polish tax law
3. Analytics
We use Google Analytics on the embertabs.com website and within the extension to understand how users interact with EmberTabs. Analytics data is collected in aggregated, non-personally-identifiable form and includes information such as device type, browser, approximate geographic location (country/region), and page or feature usage events.
For more information on how Google handles this data, see Google's Privacy & Terms.
4. Error tracking (Sentry)
We use Sentry to detect and diagnose technical errors in the extension and on our website. When an error occurs, Sentry automatically receives diagnostic information that may include your IP address, browser version, operating system, the URL where the error occurred, and a technical stack trace. This data is used solely to fix bugs and improve stability.
For more information, see Sentry's Privacy Policy.
5. Background images (Unsplash, Pexels)
EmberTabs displays background images on the new tab page. These images come from two sources:
-
Bundled images — a curated set of images is included directly in the extension package. When these are displayed, no network request is made and no data is sent to any third party.
-
Remotely loaded images — additional images are loaded on demand from third-party providers such as Unsplash and Pexels. When such an image is loaded, your IP address and basic technical information (browser type, etc.) are sent to that provider as part of the standard HTTP request. We do not control what these providers do with this data — please consult their privacy policies:
6. Server logs
When you interact with our backend (for account sync, subscription, or website access), our servers automatically log standard request information: IP address, timestamp, browser type, and the requested URL. This information is used for security, abuse prevention, and debugging. Logs are retained for a limited period and then deleted.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above to:
- Provide the core functionality of the extension
- Sync your settings across your devices (if you have an account)
- Process and manage your subscription
- Comply with our tax and accounting obligations under Polish law
- Diagnose bugs and improve the product
- Communicate with you about your account, subscription, or important service changes
- Detect and prevent abuse, fraud, and security threats
We do not sell your personal information to anyone.
Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, our legal basis for processing your data depends on the type of data:
- Performance of a contract — for providing the extension to subscribers, processing payments, and syncing accounts
- Legitimate interest — for analytics, error tracking, security, and product improvement (you can object — see "Your Rights" below)
- Legal obligation — for retaining invoice and tax records as required by Polish law
- Consent — for any processing where we ask you explicitly (e.g., optional analytics consent in regions where it is required)
Where Your Data Is Stored
User account data, settings synced through our servers, and subscription metadata are stored on our servers. Some sub-processors (Stripe, Google Analytics, Sentry, Firebase, Unsplash, Pexels) may process data outside the European Economic Area. In such cases, transfers are protected by Standard Contractual Clauses or other safeguards approved under GDPR Article 46.
Data Retention
- Account data — kept while your account is active. To delete your account, send an email to DoubleSubs7628@gmail.com with the subject "Account deletion request" from the email address associated with your account. We will process your request and remove your account data within 30 days, and confirm completion by email. Some data will be retained where we are legally required to keep it (e.g., invoices retained for 5 years under Polish tax law). If you have an active subscription at the time of deletion, it will be cancelled automatically.
- Subscription and billing records — retained for 5 years after the end of the fiscal year, as required by Polish accounting law.
- Server logs — retained for up to 90 days.
- Sentry error data — retained according to Sentry's default retention period (typically 30–90 days).
- Analytics data — retained according to Google Analytics retention settings.
Your Rights
If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, you have the following rights under GDPR:
- The right to access, correct, or delete your personal data
- The right to restrict or object to processing
- The right to data portability
- The right to withdraw consent at any time (where processing is based on consent)
- The right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority — in Poland, this is the President of the Personal Data Protection Office (UODO, uodo.gov.pl)
To exercise any of these rights, email us at DoubleSubs7628@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days.
Cookies
The embertabs.com website uses cookies for essential functionality, analytics, and (if you sign in) authentication. You can disable cookies through your browser settings, but some parts of the website may not work correctly. The extension itself does not rely on cookies for its core new tab functionality.
Children's Privacy
EmberTabs is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in some EEA jurisdictions). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will delete it.
Chrome Web Store Compliance
EmberTabs complies with the Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies, including the Limited Use requirements for user data. Specifically:
- We use the data collected only for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.
- We do not transfer user data to third parties except as needed to provide the service, comply with the law, or in connection with a merger or acquisition.
- We do not use user data for advertising or to build profiles.
- We do not allow humans to read user data unless we have your explicit consent, it is necessary for security, to comply with the law, or for debugging where data is aggregated and anonymized.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, notify you through the extension or by email if you have an account.
