Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 4, 2026
Ember Tabs is a browser extension that replaces the new tab page, available at embertabs.com and through the Chrome Web Store. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the rights you have over your data.
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, please contact us at DoubleSubs7628@gmail.com.
Data Controller
The data controller responsible for your personal information is:
Kiryl Viarenich Sole proprietorship (Jednoosobowa Działalność Gospodarcza) registered in Poland NIP: 9532793483 Contact: DoubleSubs7628@gmail.com
What the Extension Does and What Stays Local
Ember Tabs stores your bookmarks, profiles, and settings locally by default. If you sign in and enable account sync, your profile data, including bookmarks, is sent to and stored on our servers so it can be synced across your devices. Importing bookmarks from Chrome is a separate action and does not, by itself, enable account sync.
The extension uses the following browser permissions:
history: optional, used to suggest and display recently visited sites on the new tab page. Your browsing history is processed locally and is not included in account sync.favicon: used to display site icons through Chrome's favicon service. Favicon image files are not included in account sync. If Chrome's favicon service is unavailable, the extension requests icons from Google's favicon service, which receives the site's domain and standard request information, such as your IP address.bookmarks: optional, used to import bookmarks from Chrome's Bookmarks Bar when you request it. Imported bookmarks are stored locally in Ember Tabs. If account sync is enabled, these bookmarks are synced to our servers along with the other bookmarks in your profiles. The extension does not modify your Chrome bookmarks.storage: used to store extension data in your browser, including bookmarks, profiles, settings, and sign-in session information. When account sync is enabled, the profile data described below is also stored on our servers.search: used to send search queries to your browser's default search engine. Search queries are not included in account sync.
Uploaded background image files stay on your device and are not included in account sync. Background preferences, including a reference to your selected image, are synced when account sync is enabled.
Information We Collect
1. Account information and sync data (optional)
Creating an account is optional. You can use the core new tab features without signing in. When you sign in with Google, we collect:
- Your email address, display name, and profile picture URL, where provided by Google
- Your Google account identifier for authentication
- Session information needed to keep you signed in and secure your account
When account sync is enabled, we also collect and store:
- Profile information, including names, selected emoji, order, and creation dates
- Bookmarks and folders, including titles, URLs, folder structure, order, shortcuts, hidden status, creation dates, and identifiers used to match imported Chrome bookmarks
- Extension settings and preferences, including language, layout, theme, search engine preferences, and background preferences
- Your preferences for using the optional bookmarks and history permissions. Your browsing history and the browser's actual permission grants are not synced
Without account sync, your bookmarks, profiles, and settings stay in your browser. This does not prevent network requests for features such as sign-in, search, or feedback forms, as described in this policy.
2. Subscription and payment information
Ember Tabs offers a freemium model: a free version and a paid subscription with premium features. When you purchase a subscription, payments are processed by Stripe. We do not receive or store your full credit card number, CVC, or bank account details: these are handled directly by Stripe on their PCI DSS-compliant infrastructure. For more information on how Stripe handles your payment data, see Stripe's Privacy Policy.
We do receive and store:
- Your subscription status (active, cancelled, expired)
- Subscription plan and billing period
- A Stripe customer identifier
- Country of purchase (for tax purposes)
- Invoice metadata required by Polish tax law
3. Website analytics (Yandex Metrica)
We use Yandex Metrica on embertabs.com to understand website traffic and how visitors use the site. It uses cookies and browser storage identifiers and collects technical and usage information, such as your IP address, browser and device information, visited pages, traffic sources, and interactions with the site. Our configuration enables Session Replay, click maps, and link tracking. Analytics reports may be aggregated, but the underlying data includes browser identifiers and session activity.
The extension does not currently send analytics events to Yandex Metrica. Website analytics is separate from account sync and does not receive your synced bookmark or profile data from our servers.
For more information, see Yandex's Privacy Policy, Yandex Metrica's cookie documentation, and Session Replay documentation.
4. Error tracking (Sentry)
We use Sentry to detect and diagnose technical errors in the extension and on our website. When an error occurs, Sentry automatically receives diagnostic information that may include your IP address, browser version, operating system, the URL where the error occurred, and a technical stack trace. This data is used solely to fix bugs and improve stability.
For more information, see Sentry's Privacy Policy.
5. Background images
Ember Tabs displays background images from two local sources:
- Bundled images: a curated set of images is included directly in the extension package. Displaying these images does not send a request to the original image provider, such as Unsplash or Pexels.
- Images you upload: image files you choose are stored in your browser. The files are not sent to our servers or included in account sync. If sync is enabled, your background preferences and a reference to the selected image are synced, but the image file itself stays on your device.
6. Feedback forms
If you choose to open or submit a feedback form, it is provided through Google Forms. Google receives standard request information, such as your IP address and browser information, when the form loads. Information you submit is processed by Google and made available to us so we can review your feedback. This is separate from account sync. For more information, see Google's Privacy Policy.
7. Server logs
When you interact with our backend (for account sync, subscription, or website access), our servers automatically log standard request information: IP address, timestamp, browser type, and the requested URL. This information is used for security, abuse prevention, and debugging. Logs are retained for a limited period and then deleted.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above to:
- Provide the core functionality of the extension
- Sync your profiles, bookmarks, and settings across your devices (when account sync is enabled)
- Process and manage your subscription
- Comply with our tax and accounting obligations under Polish law
- Diagnose bugs and improve the product
- Communicate with you about your account, subscription, or important service changes
- Detect and prevent abuse, fraud, and security threats
We do not sell your personal information to anyone.
Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, our legal basis for processing your data depends on the type of data:
- Performance of a contract: for providing the extension to subscribers, processing payments, and syncing accounts
- Legitimate interest: for analytics, error tracking, security, and product improvement (you can object; see "Your Rights" below)
- Legal obligation: for retaining invoice and tax records as required by Polish law
- Consent: for any processing where we ask you explicitly (e.g., optional analytics consent in regions where it is required)
Where Your Data Is Stored
User account data, synced profiles (including bookmarks and settings), and subscription metadata are stored on our servers. Some third-party service providers (Stripe, Yandex Metrica, Sentry, and Google) may process data outside the European Economic Area. In such cases, transfers are protected by Standard Contractual Clauses or other safeguards approved under GDPR Article 46.
Data Retention
- Account and sync data: kept while your account is active. Signing out or turning off sync does not automatically delete data already stored on our servers. To delete your account, send an email to DoubleSubs7628@gmail.com with the subject "Account deletion request" from the email address associated with your account. We will process your request and remove your account data within 30 days, and confirm completion by email. Some data will be retained where we are legally required to keep it (e.g., invoices retained for 5 years under Polish tax law). If you have an active subscription at the time of deletion, it will be cancelled automatically.
- Subscription and billing records: retained for 5 years after the end of the fiscal year, as required by Polish accounting law.
- Server logs: retained for up to 90 days.
- Sentry error data: retained according to Sentry's default retention period (typically 30–90 days).
- Analytics data: retained according to the retention settings and policies of Yandex Metrica.
Your Rights
If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, you have the following rights under GDPR:
- The right to access, correct, or delete your personal data
- The right to restrict or object to processing
- The right to data portability
- The right to withdraw consent at any time (where processing is based on consent)
- The right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority: in Poland, this is the President of the Personal Data Protection Office (UODO, uodo.gov.pl)
To exercise any of these rights, email us at DoubleSubs7628@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days.
Cookies
The embertabs.com website uses cookies and browser storage for analytics and sign-in functionality. You can disable cookies through your browser settings, but some parts of the website may not work correctly. The extension itself does not rely on cookies for its core new tab functionality.
Children's Privacy
Ember Tabs is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in some EEA jurisdictions). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will delete it.
Chrome Web Store Compliance
Ember Tabs complies with the Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies, including the Limited Use requirements for user data. Specifically:
- We use the data collected only for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.
- We do not transfer user data to third parties except as needed to provide the service, comply with the law, or in connection with a merger or acquisition.
- We do not use user data for advertising or to build profiles.
- We do not allow humans to read user data unless we have your explicit consent, it is necessary for security, to comply with the law, or for debugging where data is aggregated and anonymized.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, notify you through the extension or by email if you have an account.
